Late last year, Congress came close to rescinding the Songwriter’s Capital Gains Equity Act as part of its tax code overhaul. But fortunately, last-minute lobbying by representatives from Nashville and other songwriting communities across the United States saved it.

She toured the world giving educational workshops and lectures. Her world tour featured visual art, experimental dance and performance art. And she even relaunched her website in May 2011 using an HTML5 “constellation” that shifted in the viewer’s perspective as they moved the cursor. One could hardly call this a marketing stunt. Björk was completely reinventing the way music is made, talked about, and experienced, all with the mission of building awareness and consciousness about Earth science and the changing environment.

Julia Wolfe is an American composer whose music has been described by the Wall Street Journal as having “long inhabited a terrain of its own, a place where classical forms are recharged by the repetitive patterns of minimalism and the driving energy of rock.” Need I say any more?! Only perhaps that she too has won a Pulitzer Prize! Her incredible work Anthracite Fields picked up the award back in 2014. A founding member of the internationally renowned contemporary ensemble Bang On a Can, Wolfe has won more awards to mention and has worked with icons such as John Cage and Colin Curry, among countless others in performance. Julia Wolfe is a serious household name and continues to create ground-breaking work.

There is no rule saying that “the producer gets this percentage and the artist gets this percentage.” All of this is negotiable. What is important is that all creators understand and take advantage of what publishing rights have to offer. This involves having a conversation with your collaborators about the publishing percentage owned, and properly registering your share with a collection service like Songtrust. Alternatively, you could be the sole creator and automatically own and register at 100%.

Technology opens doors for instantaneous craftsmanship, creativity, collaboration, and interactivity, and we need to rethink our educational models to reflect those experiences. In other words, education should mirror the new normal processes that children and adults are experiencing in all other facets of life. We need to make the classroom more collaborative, more interactive, get more feet more wet and quicker. Just as we can now communicate with people via a swipe or a click, our classrooms need to enable instantaneous applications of what we learn. This will deepen student engagement with teachers as artists or practitioners.
This international residency program is open to artists across many mediums for one- to three-month long residencies. Artists are given lodging and studio space on a remote island off the northeast coast of Newfoundland, as well as a weekly stipend for materials and day-to-day living. Be prepared to put on your public speaking hat though, as artists are required to give at least one presentation, performance, or workshop during their stay. Residencies open every two years.
